If you've been following along for the last few weeks, you know that my family has had the opportunity to play with, and review, some very cool Uncle Milton National Geographic Outdoor Explorer Toys. We have had a lot of fun with the day time explorer toys and night time toys. And last week we played indoors with some "wild" puzzles and games. But (in my opinion), I've saved the best for last.
This week we played with the National Geographic Wild Bug Vac. For some reason I think this is my favorite toy in the series so far. Maybe it's because this little anteater is so darn cute! A lot of work into making this look like a real anteater. Thankfully it's a whole lot smaller than the real-life version. It's actually the perfect size for kids to carry around the yard to look for ants.
When we tried this toy out it was too dark outside for any ant hunting, so we did a test run with pretend ants. We tore up little bits of paper to be our ant stand-ins, we made little trails throughout the house, and my son had a great time sucking them up with the anteater vac. I was surprised at how powerful it was, because the pieces of paper were much bigger than actual ants. Our "ants" ended up in the clear plastic collection box that nested in the anteater's belly. My son enjoyed taking the box out, dumping out the paper, and sucking it right back up again. Thankfully he didn't do that with the real ones!
During the day my son was able to use the anteater vac for it's real purpose - to suck up ants (plus a bonus mosquito!) He thought it was pretty cool that he could check out the ants in the viewing box, but also see them up close and personal with the magnifying glass in the lid. As a mom, I like the fact that ants, or any other critters that might make it's way into the anteater, can stay nice and contained.
My family and I really enjoyed testing out the toys from Uncle Milton's National Geographic series. They all seem very durable (an important feature), age appropriate, and give kids some very fun reasons to play outside. I plan on using these toys to get my son outside and exploring nature a little more when the weather is cooler.
