Summer Unplugged at NW YMCA: Teen Leader in Training Programs

Training Tomorrow's Leaders Today!

Service to self and others is at the heart of the LIT program. The Y is focused on giving teens the tools to bring positive change to their community and create lasting relationships with their peers. The LIT program utilizes the Y’s core values and the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets® as a roadmap to develop our teens into healthy, caring, and responsible young adults.

Leaders-in-Training Programs:
Ages 13-16. Program is in progress thru August 5th, 8am-4pm. 
Cost: Facility Member - $100/week, Program Member - $125/week

Leaders-in-Training (LIT):
Spend your summer gaining valuable work experience and leadership skills while working as a team and having fun! LITs will ble trained to work alongside counselors, implement games and activities, and assist on field trips. LITs will work in various camps so they can experience a wide array of opportunities throughout the summer.

Some of the objectives that will be covered include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Determining Leadership Styles
  • Group Communication Exercises
  • Goal Setting
  • Body Language
  • Public Speaking
  • Self Confidence
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Developmental Characteristics
  • Event Planning
  • Leading and Participating
  • Problem Solving
LITs must submit a letter of recommendation to be accepted into the program, and they must be able to work a variety of shifts, from 7:30am-6pm periodically throughout the week for which they have signed up.

Sports Leaders-in-Training:
Teens rise to the challenge in Sports Leaders In Training and discover their leadership qualities. In this program they will learn and develop skills needed to lead sports camp activities.

This program focuses on personal development areas:
  • Y’s core values
  • Building Confidence
  • Time Management
  • Activity Planning
  • Inclusion
  • Effective Coaching
  • Refereeing
  • Conflict Resolution
Sports LITs will have an opportunities to demonstrate and strengthen their skill level in each of these areas through guest speakers and learning the Y way to Youth Sports Curriculum and by shadowing Sports Camp Leaders. Sports LITS will be given hands on opportunities during various sport activities and assigned leadership roles.

Sports LITS must be able to commit to working a variety of shifts from 7:30am-6:00pm periodically throughout the week for which they have signed up.
